What this calculator tells you

A commute can cost more than gas or a transit pass. This calculator accounts for fuel, parking, public transit, vehicle wear and tear, and the value of your time to estimate the real cost of getting to work.

Issues With calculators are deterministic tools, not AI guesses. Your result is calculated from the numbers you enter using the formula shown below, and the inputs stay in your browser.

How this calculator works

Enter your round-trip commute distance, days per week, MPG, gas price, any parking and toll costs, and your daily commute time in minutes. The time value field converts your commute hours into a dollar cost using your hourly rate or what your time is worth to you.

The result shows both your out-of-pocket cost (gas, parking, tolls) and your total cost including the implicit value of time spent commuting โ€” which is often the larger number. This is especially useful when evaluating remote or hybrid work arrangements.

The formula

Daily Gas Cost = (Round-Trip Miles รท MPG) ร— Gas Price

Daily Out-of-Pocket = Daily Gas + Parking + Tolls

Weekly Out-of-Pocket = Daily Out-of-Pocket ร— Days per Week

Annual Out-of-Pocket = Weekly Out-of-Pocket ร— 52

Monthly Out-of-Pocket = Annual Out-of-Pocket รท 12

Annual Commute Hours = (Minutes per Day รท 60) ร— Days per Week ร— 52

Annual Time Value = Annual Commute Hours ร— Hourly Value of Time

Annual Total = Annual Out-of-Pocket + Annual Time Value

Example

A 28-mile round trip, 5 days/week, 28 MPG, $3.50 gas, $8 parking, $2 tolls, 50 min/day, $25/hr time value:

  • Daily gas: 28/28 ร— $3.50 = $3.50
  • Daily out-of-pocket: $3.50 + $8 + $2 = $13.50
  • Annual out-of-pocket: $13.50 ร— 5 ร— 52 = $3,510
  • Annual hours: (50/60) ร— 5 ร— 52 = 216.7 hours
  • Annual time value: 216.7 ร— $25 = $5,417
  • Annual total: $8,927

Frequently asked questions

What hourly value of time should I use? +

A common approach is to use your hourly wage โ€” it represents what you could theoretically earn in that time. Some people use a lower number if they find commuting restful (e.g., reading on transit), or higher if the commute is exhausting. There's no single right answer โ€” use what feels meaningful to you.

Does this include car depreciation and maintenance? +

Not directly โ€” this calculator focuses on direct daily costs (gas, parking, tolls) plus time. The IRS standard mileage rate ($0.67/mile in 2024) includes depreciation and maintenance, and can be used as a more comprehensive per-mile cost if you prefer.

How does remote work compare financially? +

For a typical commuter, switching to full remote work saves $3,000โ€“$12,000+ per year in total costs. Even partial remote (2โ€“3 days/week) saves proportionally. Change the "days per week" input to see the impact of any hybrid arrangement.
