What this calculator tells you
Service fees, convenience charges, processing fees, and other add-ons can make the final bill much higher than the advertised price. This calculator helps you break down exactly how much of your total was added fees versus the original price you expected to pay.
Issues With calculators are deterministic tools, not AI guesses. Your result is calculated from the numbers you enter using the formula shown below, and the inputs stay in your browser.
How this calculator works
Enter the advertised base price and every fee that was added at checkout โ tax, service fee, convenience fee, shipping, and any others. The calculator instantly shows your real total and what percentage of your final bill was fees rather than the item itself.
This works for any transaction where the final price was higher than the headline price โ concert tickets, online orders, restaurant delivery, hotel bookings, and more.
The formula
Tax Amount = Base Price ร (Sales Tax % รท 100)
Total Fees = Tax + Service Fee + Convenience Fee + Shipping + Other
Final Total = Base Price + Total Fees
Fee % = (Total Fees รท Base Price) ร 100
Example
You see concert tickets listed at $45 each. You buy two. At checkout:
- Base price: $90.00 (2 ร $45)
- Sales tax (8.5%): $7.65
- Service fee: $12.00
- Convenience fee: $4.50
Final total: $114.15 โ fees added $24.15, a 26.8% markup over the advertised price.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a hidden fee? +
Any charge added after you see the initial advertised price. Service fees, convenience fees, platform fees, processing fees, resort fees, and delivery fees all qualify. If it wasn't in the headline price, it's a fee.
Should I include tip in this calculator? +
Tip is best handled separately in the Tip Creep Calculator. This calculator is for fees added by the seller, not voluntary gratuity.
Are hidden fees legal? +
In most cases yes, as long as they're disclosed before purchase. The FTC has increased scrutiny on "junk fees" in recent years. This calculator helps you see exactly how much you're paying regardless of legality.
What fee percentage is considered normal? +
Sales tax varies by state (0โ10%). A service fee of 3โ5% and shipping of a few dollars are common. When total fees exceed 15% of the advertised price, it's worth questioning the value.
